Mayjo Clinic (3)
“Dr. Choi. Please take a look at the patient.”
Upon arriving at the station, a nurse caught Choi Ki-seok.
The male nurse’s name was David. He was tall and bulky, so I felt intimidated.
“Michael in room 501 is complaining of severe stomach pain, and Tyler in room 507 is feeling sick. And…”
David’s words came out like a rapid fire.
It looks like he is participating in a quick reading contest rather than reporting to a doctor.
“Do you understand?”
After David finished speaking, he crossed his arms and looked straight at him.
Choi Ki-seok realized it too late.
That David was trying to make trouble for him.
“Dr. Choi. Why isn’t there an answer?”
“No, I understood everything. But I guess David hoped I didn’t understand?”
David flinched at Choi Ki-seok’s point.
“Do not play around with patient reports from now on. Patient reports must be accurate and meticulous. It is not a tool to train new doctors from foreign countries.”
“….”
“Do you understand?”
When Choi Ki-seok glared, David avoided his gaze.
Ever since the charisma level exceeded level 7, this has been happening quite often. Mary had a similar reaction in the emergency room just now.
The charisma level seemed to be very effective in dealing with the staff.
“David. You’re not answering?”
“Hmm… I understand.”
David cleared his throat.
Ki-Seok Choi sat in front of the station computer and began looking at the patient’s electronic medical record.
His eyebrows became increasingly distorted.
“When Michael complains of severe abdominal pain, we are supposed to give him painkillers through PRN (whenever needed). Looking at the nursing records, I see that he has already been given medication once during the day.”
“….”
“Why did you bother to report this to me?”
“No… that’s… actually…”
“You didn’t want me to be embarrassed by your report and not know what to do?”
David flinched at Choi Ki-seok’s point.
Beads of sweat began to form on my broad forehead.
‘what. ‘There’s all this, right?’
David couldn’t hide his embarrassment.
The effort to train new doctors was in vain and was instead facing a backlash. The problem is that the opponent is Choi Ki-seok, who appears to be the weakest among the new general surgery doctors.
Unless you are a foreign doctor, this kind of suppression is impossible…
He shot Jane, who was sitting next to him, a look asking for help, but Jane completely pretended not to know him.
“David. Are you listening to me clearly?”
“Ah yes.”
“If you play around like this again, I won’t let you go.”
“I’m sorry. I’ll be more careful in the future.”
David bowed his head again.
It was definitely a mistake, but strangely, I couldn’t show my courage in front of Choi Ki-seok.
Why on earth are you doing this?…
“After seeing the rest, I have ordered everything, so please check.”
Choi Ki-seok left the station with a frown on his face. But within a few seconds, a smile appeared on my face.
A collision with a nurse was inevitable anyway.
American nurses tend to have stronger pride than Korean nurses and often have conflicts with doctors.
Since I treated David so gently today, the other nurses won’t be able to see him as water.
“hello.”
As I was about to enter the duty room, someone greeted me.
When I turned my head, I saw a male doctor lightly lowering his head.
Jose is a general surgery intern.
Jose was short and of small stature.
His expression was dark and fatigue was plastered all over his face.
“Nice to meet you Jose.”
“Are you the new resident teacher? Please take care of me.”
“Please take care of me. If you’re not busy, can we talk for a moment in the break room?”
“Ah yes.”
Choi Ki-seok took a seat in the tax department’s lounge.
“Would you like something to drink?”
“I have an energy drink.”
Choi Ki-seok handed the energy drink to Jose and placed a can of coffee in front of him.
“I’m from Korea, where does Tax come from?”
“I am from Mexico. I immigrated to the United States with my parents when I was young. I also graduated from medical school in the United States.”
“I see. How’s the work? Is it worth it?”
“I’m dying.”
There was no hesitation in Jose’s answer.
As he was answering, his already dark expression became even darker.
“Not only is the work difficult, but there is also subtle racism. I thought life would get easier once I joined Mayjo, but that’s not the case.”
“Not everyone is racist, but I think discrimination is the fate of foreigners. I also got into a lot of trouble today.”
“I saw you fighting with David earlier!”
Jose continued speaking in an excited tone.
“Dr. Choi. It was really cool. David, that guy is a guy who only gives trouble to foreign doctors, but Dr. Choi gave him a punch. I felt so relieved just now.”
Jose’s face opened for the first time.
“Did you get taxed too?”
“Yes. I suffered and am still suffering. I hope I can quickly finish my general surgery rotation and move on to another department.”
“Anyway, there are people with twisted minds everywhere.”
Choi Ki-seok took a sip of coffee and used the Eyes of Hippocrates on Jose.

When I used medical mode, my stats came to mind.
Perhaps because I was an intern, all the numbers were crawling on the floor.
Next, when I used patient mode, fatigue came to mind as a diagnosis. I felt like I finally knew why my skin was dull and my eyes were lifeless.
“Jose. Can I give you just one piece of advice?”
“Advice?”
“I hope you listen without thinking I’m going too far. It will definitely help Jose.”
“All right.”
“Hmm… I saw Jose for the first time today and it’s my first time talking to him, but he doesn’t seem very confident. Straighten your shoulders when you walk and raise your voice when you talk. If you have an opinion, don’t hide it.”
“Wow. How do you know my personality so well?”
“Hahaha. Should I say persimmon?”
Choi Ki-seok scratched his cheek with an embarrassed expression. In fact, I made an inference because Jose’s charisma stat is 1.
“I completely understand how Jose feels. Since he comes from a foreign country and communication is difficult, he has no choice but to feel intimidated. I do the same. But if you stay still, Jose will only become a fool.”
“….”
“If you feel that your actions or thoughts are right, then stand up for them. Just like I did. Then, other people will not be able to ignore the tax.”
“Can I do that?”
“You can do it. You just have to change your mind a little.”
Choi Ki-seok moved to the seat next to Jose and lightly tapped him on the shoulder.
[You have used the encouragement skill.]

“Thank you for the advice. I will keep that in mind.”
Jose smiled brightly for the first time, and Choi Ki-seok also smiled calmly.
The two people left the break room while talking.
“Hey, Dr. Choi.”
“why?”
“That’s…”
Jose hesitated and then clenched his fists.
“You placed an order to insert a nasogastric tube for patient Jake. I’m still not good at inserting a nasogastric tube, so would you mind giving me a demonstration?”
“There’s no reason not to.”
“thank you.”
“Bring the treatment kit and come to the hospital room.”
“yes!”
Jose headed towards the station at a fast pace.
Choi Ki-seok watched his back and nodded slightly.
A small but big change has begun. I was curious about what taxes would look like in the future.
He visited the patient first and explained the need for insertion of a nasogastric tube.
“I brought it.”
Jose gathered his treatment kit and stood next to him.
“Usually people think that inserting a tube is difficult, but the important thing is the patient’s posture. If the patient’s posture is good in the first place, there is no reason for the tube to go in incorrectly.”
Ki-seok Choi pulled the patient’s chin and made him lower his head slightly. Afterwards, the length of the L-tube was measured and a generous amount of lubricating gel was applied to the tube.
Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
A tube was inserted into the patient’s nostril.
Under his unstoppable hands, the tube was already inserted close to 20cm.
“Jose. Starting now is important. This is the point where the esophagus and airway meet. Patient, try swallowing. Keep swallowing.”
Following his instructions, the patient began swallowing saliva.
The moment when the epiglottis covers the larynx.
Ki-Seok Choi quickly pushed the tube into the esophagus.
Next, a small amount of air was injected into the tube and a foaming sound was confirmed with a stethoscope.
Nasogastric tube insertion was successful.
“Teacher. You are amazing.”
“Well, with this much. It’s not difficult once you learn the trick.”
Choi Ki-seok smiled shyly at Jose’s respectful look in his eyes.
When I explained the tips again, Jose showed passion by writing down each and every detail.
After completing the nasogastric tube insertion training, I returned to the duty room.
A quiet and empty duty room.
As I stood at the window and looked out, a feeling of loneliness suddenly came over me.
If I were at Uijin University, I would have been busy having late-night snacks and conversations with Min-hyeok Min, Ji-hoon Seo, and Young-ho Lee.
It was a time I thought was insignificant at the time.
I miss that time so much now.
I think I now know that moments like these help me relieve stress and build rapport with other staff.
I stared blankly out the window and then looked down at the couple ring.
Jeong Seol-hwa’s smiling face appeared above the ring.
“Whew…”
Choi Ki-seok took the cell phone in his hand and put it back in his robe. Then I sat down at my desk and checked tomorrow’s surgery schedule.
Colon cancer surgery, stomach cancer surgery, liver cancer surgery.
The most common surgeries performed in general surgery were concentrated at once.
After I am on duty, I will observe everything and record it on video.
Only then can you be active as a surgical assistant.
‘Let’s rest for a moment.’
Choi Ki-seok leaned against the back of the chair and closed his eyes.
* * *
That evening.
Choi Ki-seok stood up and stretched.
His eyes were fixed on the internal medicine manual he had been reading just a moment ago.
“It’s impossible.”
My thesis was a breeze. Even though the title was effective, studying internal medicine was hard work.
The drugs used vary depending on patient case and symptom.
Choi Ki-seok realized once again that he was a surgeon.
Drurr.
I left the duty room and started walking around the hospital room.
The hospital room was deathly quiet.
Most of the patients watched TV or slept. Like in Korea, it was impossible to see patients talking to each other or their families visiting and being noisy.
‘It’s a boring neighborhood.’
Choi Ki-seok burst out laughing.
But when I was halfway through the hospital room, I heard a loud voice from the end of the hallway.
“What are you doing? Are you crazy!”
The patients in the hallway shook their bodies at the sudden shout.
Choi Ki-seok walked quickly towards the source of the sound.
When I entered the room, I saw a large patient standing in front of the bed, fuming. His face was bright red and he looked like he was going to hit David who was standing in front of him at any moment.
David, on the other hand, kept his head down and kept saying he was sorry.
“What happened?”
Choi Ki-seok got between the two people.
